Worms are a common health concern for cats and dogs, affecting their overall well-being if left untreated. Understanding the types of worms and recognizing their signs can help pet owners take quick action. 

Common Types of Worms

1. Roundworms : These are the most common intestinal worms. They look like spaghetti and can grow several inches long. Pets can get roundworms by eating contaminated soil, feces, or infected prey. Puppies and kittens can also get them from their mother during nursing or birth.

2. Tapeworms :  Flat, segmented worms that live in the intestines. You might see segments that look like grains of rice in feces or around the anus. Often contracted through fleas or by eating infected rodents.

3. Hookworms : Tiny worms that attach to the intestinal wall and feed on blood, which can cause anemia. Pets can get infected by eating contaminated soil or feces, or larvae can penetrate the skin.

4. Whipworms : Thin, thread-like worms that affect the large intestine, more common in dogs. Pets get infected by eating whipworm eggs in contaminated environments.

5. Heartworms : Dangerous worms that live in the heart and lungs. They mostly affect dogs but can occasionally infect cats. Spread through mosquito bites, heartworms are among the most harmful parasites.

General Symptoms for Most Worms:

• Weight loss even with a good appetite.

• A bloated or swollen belly, especially in kittens or puppies.

• Diarrhea, sometimes with blood.

• Vomiting, sometimes with visible worms.

• Dull or thin coat.

• Increased scooting or licking of the anal area.

• Visible worms or worm segments in feces or near the anus.

Heartworm-Specific Symptoms:

• Constant coughing.

• Tiredness and unwillingness to exercise.

• Trouble in breathing.

• Swollen belly due to fluid buildup.
