Summer Care Tips for Pets: Keeping Our Furry Friends Safe and Happy

When the temperature rises, our pets feel the heat just like we do—sometimes even more. As pet owners, we have to make sure that our pets are cool, comfortable and happy all summer long. Whether you have an energetic pup or a curious feline, these simple summer care tips will help you ensure your fur babies are safe and wagging their tails or purring all summer long!

1. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Like us, pets need more water when it is hot outside. Make sure you regularly provide them with a fresh bowl of clean, cool water. If you're going on walks or a car ride, always carry an easy-to-use portable water bottle or travel bowl for your pet to drink. Animals can quickly dehydrate, especially after playtime.

Tip: Ice cold water is also great for your pets, so toss in a few ice cubes in their water bowl for added fun!

2. Limit Outdoor Activities

Avoid taking your dog out during the hottest part of the day, typically between 11 AM and 4 PM. Instead, plan your walks early in the morning or after sunset when the temperatures are cooler. Hot pavements can burn your pet’s paws — a simple rule to remember: if it’s too hot for your hand, it’s too hot for their paws.

Tip: Try indoor games like hide-and-seek or gentle tug-of-war to burn off energy safely.

3. Include Shade and Cool Places

If your pets love lounging outside, make sure they have access to a shaded area at all times. Whether that be from trees, an umbrella, or a porch with a roof overtop, a shaded area will help provide your pets with relief from the sun. Whenever you are at home, make sure you are creating cool and comfortable places for your pets.

Tip: Cooling mats or wet towels can be lifesavers during hot afternoons.

4. Grooming Matters

Regular brushing to remove loose fur will help keep your pet’s coat clean, clear and in good shape. But be sure to never shave your pet down to the skin (unless directed to do so by your veterinarian) because fur is a natural insulator and helps control their body temperature and protects them from sunburn.

For Cats: Gentle brushing will keep your cat cool and reduce the incidence of hairballs, which are more evident in summer due to the additional shedding.

5. Watch Out for Heatstroke Symptoms

Know the signs of overheating in pets:

- Heavy panting

- Excessive drooling

- Lethargy

- Vomiting

- Walking unsteadily

If you notice any or a combination of these symptoms in your pet, get them to a cooler area and contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.

Important Reminder: Never leave your pet in a parked car, even for a minute as the heat inside a parked car can rise rapidly to dangerous levels.

6. Prevent against Parasites

In addition to sunburn, summer also brings fleas, ticks and mosquitoes. Make sure your pets are using appropriate flea and tick preventative treatment, and talk with your veterinarian about what they recommend for mosquitoes. Regular grooming and checking for any unusual bites or rashes can save your pet from discomfort and serious diseases.

With a little added awareness, summer can bring fun and exciting experiences for you and your pet. With lots of water, plenty of shade, and a ton of love, your furry friend can enjoy the sunny days just like you.
