How to Make Vet Visits Less Stressful for Your Pet
Share
Let’s be honest going to the vet isn’t exactly a walk in the park. For pets, it can be stressful. New smells, different animals and getting poked and prodded are overwhelming. And as pet parents, it’s hard to see our furry babies stressed out. But don’t worry; there are a few small changes you can make to help your pet feel more comfortable.
Here’s how you can help your pet feel more at ease the next time you visit the vet.
1. Start at Home
The more your pet is used to being touched, the easier vet exams will be.
At home, try to handle your pet's paws, ears, mouth, etc. and give them some treats or soft praise. Think of it as training/familiarization, but you only can do this at home when your pet is most comfortable.
2. The Carrier or Leash Should Feel Familiar, Not Scary
If you use a carrier for your cat or small dog, don’t just bring it out on vet day.
Leave it open in your home with a soft blanket or a treat inside. Let them explore it, nap in it, and get comfortable. That way, it won’t feel like a trap. For bigger dogs, make sure their leash or harness fits well and feels safe.
3. Stay Calm
Your pet is reading your energy. If you are nervous, they will be too. Speak to them in a calm, happy voice no matter how worried you are. Smile! Reassure them. It helps more than we think.
4. Choose the Right Time
If possible, consider scheduling your appointments during the quiet times. Ask your vet when the quieter times of the day are. Less pets usually means a much calmer environment.
5. Bring Comfort Items
Think of their favorite toy, a blanket, or even something that smells like you.
Familiar smells are comforting. A few treats in your pocket can also go a long way before and after the visit!
6. Use Calming Tools If Needed
Some pets get super nervous, no matter what. That’s okay.
There are sprays, calming treats, and even soothing music that can help. Check with your vet about safe options.
7. Reward, Reward, Reward!
After the vet, do something fun. A treat, a walk, a cuddle whatever makes your pet happy.
They’ll slowly start to connect vet visits with good experiences, not just the scary stuff.
Your pet may never love going to the vet and that’s okay.
But with a little extra love and prep, you can turn a stressful visit into something a lot more manageable. They trust you completely so when you’re calm and caring, it helps them feel safe too.
