What Food Should You Offer Your Cat in Summer?

The heat of summer can affect our cats in ways we do not realize. They will often eat less, they will move slower, and do not drink enough to stay healthy. Making some minor adjustments to their diet can have a positive impact on how they feel during the hot months.

Here are some tips to think about when feeding your cat in summer:

1. Wet Food Can Help with Hydration

Cats usually do not drink much water during hot weather, which can be problematic.

Wet food contains adequate moisture, so it's a good way to keep them hydrated without forcing them to drink more. You can even add a little extra water to their meals for a refreshing boost.

2. Light and Lean Proteins

Sometimes, it's best to choose proteins that are easier to digest, such as chicken, turkey, or fish. Light meals are easier on their stomach during high temperatures. Just remember to cook any meat plain, no salt, no spices, and no sauces.

3. Cool Treats

You can freeze their favorite wet food or plain cooked meat in small quantities, in ice cube trays. These small frozen servings are refreshing, fun, and safe in the heat.

4. Smaller, Frequent Meals

Cats might eat less in summer. You can provide more frequent, smaller meals throughout the day to keep their energy levels up without fully loading their digestion.

5. Always Fresh Water

Place several bowls of clean water around your home. Some cats prefer running water, so a pet fountain can be a great idea. You can even drop in a few ice cubes to make it more tempting!

Foods to Restrict ❌

  • Heavy, greasy meals

  • Dairy products (most cats are lactose intolerant)

  • Raw meats/protein (more risk of bacteria being present)

  • Human snacks (human snacks that are salted, spicy, or sugary are not good for your pet!)

In summer, simple changes like offering lighter meals, cool treats, and extra water can help your cat feel more comfortable and happy.

At Furever Kare, we believe small acts of care make a big difference in your pet’s life — every season, every day.
